FAMILY ASSISTANT

SOS Children's Villages International is a global organization created in 1949 that works to meet the needs and protect the interests and rights of children who have lost parental care and those at risk of losing it. SOS Children's Villages International works through member associations in 135 countries around the world.

SOS Children's Villages in Guinea-Bissau is looking to recruit five (5) Family Assistants to SOS Children's Village of Canchungo and Gabú.

Job Summary

Family Assistant supports the SOS mother in various ways and replaces her during periods of leave (annual or sick). She respects the role of the SOS mother as the person responsible for the children and young people in an SOS family, while at the same time contributing to the children's well-being and development. SOS Family Assistants work continuously with two to three SOS families or can alternate throughout the program.

Hierarchical relations

  • She reports directly to the social worker and is under the general supervision of the alternative care coordinator.
  • Works closely with SOS Mom
  • Receives technical support and guidance from the National Management Team and the National Program Development Manager
  • Cooperates with the National Office's Program and Sponsorship team, harmonizing activities and processes, in line with the integrated approach.

Main Tasks of the Family Assistant

  1. a) Support and relieve the SOS mother by providing direct care for the children
  • The SOS Family Assistant cooperates with the SOS mother according to an agreed framework, which includes the SOS mother's requirements regarding childcare and home care. She lives in the same house with the SOS mother, provides all care for the children. She also assists the SOS mother during periods of strenuous work, supporting them in child development and housework. Ensure that the children have good physical health and a proper, balanced diet; ensure that the children are dressed appropriately; ensure that each child enjoys the best possible education; abide by the rules and all regulations that may be introduced by the Alternative Care Coordinator.

 

  1. b) Assist the SOS mother with child development activities
  • The family assistant knows each child's story and acts with sensitivity in relation to each child's development. She supports the SOS mother in working towards the child's development goals in the family's daily activities.

 

  1. c) Provide a complementary model for children and young people
  • As an important person in children's lives, an SOS family assistant has an impact on children's development. She is aware of this role and offers children and young people another adult perspective, sharing her values and life experience

 

Main Tasks Family Assistant

The SOS Family Assistant cooperates with the SOS mother according to an agreed framework, which includes the SOS mother's requirements regarding the care of the children and the home. When an SOS mother is absent for any reason, she moves into the SOS family home and provides temporary care for the children. She also assists the SOS mother during periods of strenuous work, supporting them in child development and housework

  1. b) Helping the SOS mother with child development activities

The family assistant knows each child's story and acts with sensitivity in relation to each child's development. She supports the SOS mother in working towards the child's development goals in the family's daily activities.

  1. c) Provide a complementary model for children and young people

Qualifications and skills required

  • Academic background: Academic background: At least 12th grade education and/or a degree in Education
  • Work experience2 years' experience in education and child development
  • Languages: excellent written and spoken Portuguese. French and/or English is an advantage
  • Skills:
    • Knowledge of children's rights and child protection.
    • Have knowledge and understanding of the objectives and principles of the SOS Children's Village idea;
    • Have a deep and true love of working with children;
    • Being an educator with experience in education
    • Be able to run the family home to a high standard of hygiene and efficiency
